Tips On Changing Baby Diapers

Most new parents spend a considerable amount of time changing baby diapers. A few helpful tips may make the process a lot easier as you and your baby get into a routine. Newborns vary in how often they use the bathroom. Even though modern-day diapers are more absorbent than ever, it is important not to leave a baby in a soiled diaper as this can create health problems including infections and diaper rash.

Many new parents learn quickly that it’s important to have all of the essential changing supplies within arm’s reach before beginning the process. These supplies should include the diaper itself, fasteners if you’re using cloth baby diapers, baby wipes or a soft washcloth with warm water nearby, ointment, and a changing pad. Even newborns can roll surprisingly fast off of a surface, so having all of your supplies within reach is a crucial first step.

Once you’ve removed the soiled diaper, use the baby wipe or wet washcloth to thoroughly clean your baby’s bottom from front to back. Wiping from back to front can easily spread bacteria which can cause urinary tract infections. For easier access, gently lift your baby’s legs up by the ankles. If you have a baby boy, it is wise to place a cloth over his penis to avoid urine spray. After you’ve cleaned your baby’s bottom, dry with a soft washcloth. Next, you will apply baby ointment.

If you are using disposable baby diapers, keep a diaper pail nearby. While lifting your baby’s legs up, slide the new diaper underneath. The adhesive strips should be on the half of the diaper that you slide under your baby. The diaper should be pulled up so that the adhesive strips are in line with your baby’s bellybutton. Bring the front part of the diaper up onto your baby’s belly and fasten the adhesive strips.

Cloth diapers can be fastened in a few ways. We’ll focus on the most commonly used method here. First, fold the cloth square in half in order to form a triangle. Lift your baby’s legs up and slide the diaper underneath with the longest side on your baby’s back and the pointed part of the triangle pointing towards the feet. Bring the pointed section up between your baby’s legs and onto the belly. Next, you’ll bring the two sides towards the center so that they overlap the middle section. Fasten all three sections together with a safety pin.
